Code of practice part 2 - the housing of animals in designated breeding and supplying establishments
In 1989 Parliament endorsed the Code of Practice for the housing and care of animals used in scientific procedures, which was closely based on the Royal Society and the Universities Federation for Animal Welfare (RS/UFAW) Guidelines (2).
This Code applies to designated scientific procedure establishments but not to places designated solely as breeding or supplying establishments.
The present Code applies to all species of animals listed in Schedule 2 to the Act maintained in designated breeding and/or supplying establishments.
It is issued following extensive consultations within the scientific community, with laboratory animal breeding organisations and with organisations concerned with the welfare of animals.
The Laboratory Animals Breeders Association (LABA) Guidelines on the care and housing of animals bred for scientific purposes, which were prepared in consultation with the Association of the British Pharmaceutical Industry (ABPI), British Laboratory Animal Veterinary Association (BLAVA), Institute of Animal Technology (IAT), and the Laboratory Animal Science Association (LASA), have been used in breeding establishments for a number of years. As these standards have been found to be acceptable in terms of animal behaviour, welfare and productivity these have been used as the basis for the standards in this Code of Practice.
